Men's Basketball TRU WolfPack

Dynamic Wright commits to WolfPack

KAMLOOPS – Head coach Scott Clark and the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team are pleased to announce that the ultra-athletic Reuben Wright will join the squad for the 2022-23 season.

From Salt Spring Island, Wright will bring his 6-7 frame and dynamic athleticism to the 'Pack where he will play as a forward.

"He's big-bodied, when I saw him last year he was 6-5 so he's grown and maybe there's still a little growth left," said Clark. "He's got a really good frame, good shoulders and can pack on some weight while still being dynamic, he can get off his feet and can run."

"One of the things we struggled with this year was defending the inside, whether we talk about post play or rebounding. I think that he's a kid that can have an immediate impact in some regard, but I think that just like every kid, his best years are down the road. What you envision down the road is a kid that puts on 20-30 lbs, maintains that dynamic athleticism and provides rim-protection, rebounding and scoring."

A Vancouver Island First Team All-Star and graduate of Gulf Islands Secondary School, Wright will join fellow Island local Brendan Sullivan on the 'Pack.

"I chose to come to TRU to achieve my athletic and academic goals," said Wright. "I feel that committing to the WolfPack is a great first step towards my future."

A former member of Team B.C. at the youth level, Wright is looking forward to joining the 'Pack.

"I am excited to join the men's basketball team as a player that likes to lead by example and is eager to learn from my teammates and coaches," said Wright. "I believe I can bring energy, enthusiasm and a 'whatever it takes' mentality to the WolfPack."

Currently trying out for Team B.C. U-18, Wright continues to strive to prove himself on the national stage.

"He'll have a chance to make that team and it'd be great if he does, because he gets to not only represent the province but also experience a higher level of competition and coaching," said Clark.

Clark is excited at the prospect of not just bringing Reuben Wright the athlete to his program, but also what Reuben can provide as a student and as a person.

"He's a good student, we spoke to high school teachers and coaches that had nothing but positive things to say, provincial team coaches said he was a terrific kid and our interactions with him were terrific," said Clark. "Casey Knight (WolfPack men's volleyball assistant coach) has known him for a bit with them both being from Salt Spring and he had nothing but great things to say."

Wright will join the WolfPack for the 2022-23 season as the team looks to make their eighth playoff appearance in the past nine seasons.

"I would like to say a big thank you to my parents, family, friends, coaches and community for helping me get to where I am now."
