WolfPack’s season ends with pair of close losses

KAMLOOPS – They were in both games until the very last pitch, but in the end the Thompson Rivers WolfPack baseball team lost a pair of close contests this past weekend at the 2022 Canadian College World Series in Lethbridge.

Falling by scores of 5-4 and 9-7 to the PBA Dawgs and Edmonton Collegiate Hawks respectively, the WolfPack failed to move on in the double-elimination format tournament. The results bring an end to the 2022 CCBC season for a very young WolfPack squad that featured 26 first-year players.

Back in October the 'Pack went 2-2 at the CCBC Fall Championship with a round robin win over the Calgary Dinos and then a consolation game triumph over the Edmonton Collegiate Hawks.

In the Spring, TRU went 10-18 in their first regular season CCBC action since the 2019-20 season, good enough to finish seventh in the eight-team league.

After the tournament the WolfPack announced their annual year-end award winners:

Gold Glove: Lucas Miracle
Top Pitcher: Jacob Ross
Rookie of the Year: Carter Spencer
Most Valuable Player: Carter Spencer
Most Improved Player: Carter White
Top Hitter: Josh Wright

WEEKEND WRAP-UP

GAME 1: DAWGS 5, WOLFPACK 4

Entering the weekend as the seventh-seed, TRU nearly pulled off the upset over the No. 2 seed and host Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs in their first game of the tournament. Trailing by a run in the top of the ninth and with their backs against the wall, Lucas Miracle came up with a clutch hit to score Tate Larson and send the game into extra innings tied at 4-4. The Dawgs found an answer however, and took the game with a single run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Carter Spencer, Miracle and Jacob Anker all had RBI's for TRU while Jacob Ross had a great outing on the mound, going 9 strong innings and striking out 12.

GAME 2: HAWKS 9, WOLFPACK 7

Facing a must-win game against the Edmonton Collegiate Hawks, TRU built a big lead but couldn't hold on. Tallying five runs in the seventh inning, thanks to two RBI's from Tate Larson and Matt Richards as well as one from Hunter Fanshaw, the 'Pack held 7-2 lead. From there it was all Edmonton however, as the Hawks scored a single run in the seventh and six in the eighth inning to take the game.
