Weekend Story
KAMLOOPS – The final home weekend of the 2024-25 regular season is here for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team that will pay tribute to a trio of graduating student-athletes.
Taking on the UNBC Timberwolves (3-9) at noon on Friday and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, the games will see the 'Pack facing a team they have had plenty of tight battles with over the years.
The contest on Friday will be TRU's annual School Day game, with students from across School District 73 invited to come out and take in the game. Tickets for Friday are free for all who wish to join.
Saturday will see the 'Pack honour
Nya Derkach,
Danijela Kovacevic and
Priyanca Sundher as they play the final home games of their WolfPack careers.
Joining the 'Pack from Vernon, Derkach has been with the program since 2021 and has played over 55 regular season games for TRU. A leader on and off the court, Derkach will graduate from TRU with an Arts – Psychology degree.
Originally from Serbia, Kovacevic has made quite the impact on the program. The 5-7 guard has tallied 429 points in her 66 career Canada West games played and leaves the program in the top 10 of the program's record books in assists and steals.
With the program since 2021, sharpshooter
Priyanca Sundher will be remembered for her skills on the court and her leadership off it. With 73 career three-pointers to her name, Sundher has suited up in 66 career regular season games and is sixth in the program record books for three-point field goals per game.
TRU battled hard in a pair of close losses last weekend. The 'Pack were right with the TWU Spartans in the first half before fading late in a 67-33 defeat Friday. On Saturday TRU played one of their best games of the season despite coming out on the losing against a strong UVic Vikes squad.
UNBC took on those very same Spartans and Vikes with similar results last weekend. The Timberwolves fell to UVic by a tally of 70-51 and to TWU by a score of 88-62.
These teams met on the opening weekend of the season with the Timberwolves pulling out a narrow victory, 61-51, in Prince George.
3 Things
1: Entry is FREE for everyone to Friday's noon contest. A great chance to catch some basketball on your lunch break!
2: This weekend will be the final chance for basketball fans to catch the 'Pack inside the TCC. TRU finishes their schedule two-straight road weekends followed by a bye.
3: Papa Murphy's will be serving up pizza inside the TCC all season long.
By The Numbers
3862: Between the three of them, the graduating players have played nearly 4000 combined minutes of Canada West action.
18: Rookie sensation
Morgan Eichenberger recorded 18 rebounds in TRU's game against UVic last weekend, that mark was the most by a rookie in the program's history and tied for the third-most by any player in program history.
442: With 442 career points, Kovacevic is 18th in the program record book.
