Weekend Story
KAMLOOPS – Coming off one of the strongest regular season campaigns in program history, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team will hit the road to start their postseason run when they face the UBC Thunderbirds in a best-of-three Canada West quarter-final series this weekend Feb. 28 – March 2.
Taking on the Thunderbirds at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, 6:00 p.m. on Saturday (and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday if needed) the games will see the 13-7 and No. 5 seed WolfPack trying to upset the 15-5 and No. 4 seed Thunderbirds.
Going 9-1 at home this season, the WolfPack will need to get it done on the road if they hope to advance. TRU has been consistently strong all year long, ranking in the U SPORTS top 10 throughout the entire campaign. The WolfPack enter the playoffs as winners in three of their last four games, dropping just three sets over their final two weekends of action.
The Thunderbirds meanwhile, have won just one of their last four contests. They were swept by the No. 2 seed Alberta Pandas on the road before earning a split with the No. 1 seed Fraser Valley Cascades to wrap up their regular season slate.
There will be a chance for some playoff revenge for a WolfPack squad that fell to the Thunderbirds at this same stage of the playoffs last season. After defeating TRU, UBC went on all the way to win the U SPORTS National Championship.
TRU will be aiming for their first playoff series victory since defeating MacEwan in the 2019- 20 season and their first ever postseason win against UBC.
The winner of this series will advance to the single elimination Canada West Final Four hosted at the highest remaining seed. With the Manitoba Bisons hosing the U SPORTS National Championship this season, if Manitoba wins their quarter-final series with the Mount Royal Cougars than all four teams in the final four will advance to the national championship tournament.
