Weekend Story

KAMLOOPS – The best season in program history will continue this weekend for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team that travels to Langley to compete in the U SPORTS National Championship tournament for the first time.

Entering the eight-team tournament seeded No. 7, the WolfPack will get their tournament underway against the No. 2 seed Sherbrooke Vert et Or in a national quarter-final at noon on Friday. A win against Sherbrooke and TRU will advance to a semifinal on Saturday at either 6:00 or 8:00 p.m., a loss and they will play in a consolation semifinal on Saturday at noon or 2:00 p.m.

The WolfPack clinched their berth at nationals after defeating the reigning national champion Manitoba Bisons in the Canada West quarter-finals. TRU (14-6), outlasted Manitoba (14-6) in a 3-2 victory Thursday, fell to the Bisons 3-1 Friday before securing the best-of-three series with a dominant 3-0 victory on Saturday. In their last action the WolfPack took on the best in the west at the CW Final Four, falling to the Alberta Pandas (18-2) 3-0 in the semifinal and the UBC Thunderbirds (3-1) in the bronze medal match. Middles Maria Dancheva and Myah Cressy were the standouts in the bronze medal game, finishing with 12 and 11 kills as well as three blocks apiece respectively. Throughout a regular season that saw them be ranked in the U SPORTS Top 10 for much of the year and finish with the highest winning percentage in program history, the WolfPack defeated fellow nationals-bound teams in the No. 4 seed TWU Spartans and No. 5 seed UBC Thunderbirds.

Sherbrooke (20-1), cruised through the RSEQ conference, finishing first and losing just one game in the regular season. The Vert et Or defeated the Montreal Carabins (13-8) in the RSEQ Championship.

3 Things

1: A fan bus will be heading down to Langley Friday morning. You can get a ride there and back, a ticket to the game, a WolfPack shirt and more for just $30 by signing up HERE.

2:  The Den on campus will be hosting a watch party on all days of competition. There will be door prizes, food specials and more to enjoy while cheering on the WolfPack.

3: This is TRU's first-ever time reaching the national championship tournament in women's volleyball and the seventh time in school history that a WolfPack varsity team has reached a U SPORTS National Championship tournament. Men's volleyball has done so three times (2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10), men's soccer twice (2017-18 and 2022-23) and men's basketball once (2015-16).

By The Numbers

1: Leading the team to the best regular season winning percentage and first-ever home playoff series victory, WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm was named the CW Coach of the Year.

221: Racking up 221 digs in the regular season, Olivia Andulajevic earned the CW Libero of the Year award.

2: Both Libby Meldrum and Rida Erlalelitepe of the WolfPack were named CW Second Team All-Stars.

3.26: Sherbrooke's Beatrice Dubreuil led all player on either team in the quarter-final matchup with 3.26 kills-per-set, good enough for 20th in the nation.

2.10: A tough-serving team, Sherbrooke finished tenth in the nation with 2.10 service aces-per-set as a squad.

898: The WolfPack were sixth in the nation as a team with 898 kills on the season.
