Earning U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian status an outstanding six times, the computer science student has served as an integral part of the WolfPack community during his time at TRU.
"Throughout his career as a member of the WolfPack men's basketball program, Asher has demonstrated what it truly means to be a student athlete," said WolfPack head coach
Chad Jacobson. "On the court, in the classroom, and in the community, Asher has not only strived for excellence but has impacted all those around him in a long-lasting and positive way."
Joining the 'Pack from Langley back in 2019, Mayan has grown into a leader not only for his team but for the athletic department as well as the campus, Kamloops and basketball communities. Heavily involved with coaching in his hometown, Mayan has given back by working with both Impact Hoops and Fraser Valley Elite programs. In Kamloops, he has been a volunteer coach with the Kamloops Alliance Church summer camps. He serves a leader in the TRU PACE program where he is responsible for helping lead first-year WolfPack student-athletes not just with their studies but also in adapting to living away from home. Mayan is also a student leader with the Alpha program. In conjunction with the Kamloops Alliance Church, the Alpha program is a space designed for student-athletes to gather in fellowship to discuss their faith.
The first six-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian in program history, Mayan earned a perfect 4.33 GPA in the fall semester and was the 2022 WolfPack Dr. Roger H. Barnsley Scholar-Athlete of the Year awarded to the WolfPack student-athlete who best combines academics, with athletic performance.
On the court Mayan will go down as one of the all-time greats in program history. He is fifth in program history with 943 points while also slotting into the top ten in free throws, three-point field goals, assists, steals, minutes played and games started. Mayan also holds the all-time Canada West record for free-throw percentage with a mark of .892 per cent. This past season he helped the 'Pack capture their first Canada West playoff win since 2017.
Mayan becomes the fifth member of the 'Pack to win a Canada West award and the second to earn the title of Student-Athlete Community Service Award winner after Micheal Rouault won it in 2019-10. He will now move forward as the Canada West nominee for the U SPORTS Ken Shields award.
"I am extremely proud of what he Asher accomplished and how he has represented not only our program, but WolfPack Athletics and Thompson Rivers University," said Jacobson. "Being named the Canada West Student Athlete Community Service Award winner is an incredible and well-deserved honour."
