KAMLOOPS – A decorated student-athlete from Surrey is set to join the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's basketball team as head coach
Scott Clark is pleased to announcement the commitment of Cyrus Harrison.
A two-time B.C. Provincial Championship High School All-Star with Elgin Park Secondary, Harrison will join the WolfPack in time for the 2022-23 season.
"One of the main reasons I decided to commit to TRU is because I believe academically and athletically it is the best fit for me and my future," said Harrison. "During my visit Coach Clark and his players were all very welcoming, the players told me about their experiences at TRU and they had nothing but good things to say about the school and team. I am excited to further my education and basketball career at TRU."
The 6-5 Harrison plays club basketball for AthElite Basketball Academy and becomes the third product of Surrey to join the roster.
"The first thing is that he's a really athletic kid, he's 6-5, quick and I think there's maybe even some more growth in him," said Clark. "He has the ability to do a little of everything. He can bounce it a bit, he can shoot it a bit, he's a pretty good defender. I think you are looking for guys that can play multiple positions on offence and guard multiple positions on defence and he fits that bill."
Harrison just narrowly missed out on a AAA provincial title with his Elgin Park Orcas in March after they finished second, but was named a Second Team All-Star for his efforts throughout the tournament.
"It means you are getting a pretty good player," said Clark on Harrison earning the all-star nod. "There's a certain confidence that comes from being recognized like that and also from playing in big moment games like the Junior Provincial Championships or the Provincial AAA Final. The more meaningful games kids have played in, the better they are at dealing with the moment."
Also a two-time all-star at the prestigious Surrey RCMP Basketball Classic, Harrison is someone that Clark sees as a complete student-athlete that will be a good fit with his current team both on and off the court.
"When you are talking about trying to build a team, you are talking about kids that are like-minded, like-minded in their approach to the classroom and to the game of basketball," said Clark. "I think he's a guy that is like-minded in what he wants academically and athletically to our group and that tends to build a camaraderie amongst the guys over time. I like our group and I like the addition of Cyrus to our group."
Harrison joins the previously announced
Denys Bachurin and
Reuben Wright in the WolfPack recruiting class and will look to bolster the 'Pack as they chase the eighth playoff appearance in program history.
"We are excited that he's joining us," said Clark. "He's already a good player and I think he has the chance to become a really good player if his work ethic and attitude are good. His best basketball is far ahead of him and he has the ability to grow."
